MY ROAD TO OM

Yoga is for everyBODY - not just if you’re flexible.  How do you feel after doing yoga?  I know I am starting to feel longer, leaner and stronger.  A great added benefit is that I seem to be sleeping a lot better too!

There have been many studies done on the positive health benefits of doing yoga.  A 2017 study published in the Journal of Alternative Complimentary Medicine found that women who practice 60 minutes of yoga 2 times per week had significantly reduced depression systems and stress levels.  Research also supports reduced inflammation among those who are doing yoga.  Another study showed reduce inflammatory markers in breast cancer survivors with persistent fatigue. It can also be beneficial for those suffering from chronic pain.  It is not a quick fix and most of the benefits result as a culmination of regular practice, but consistency can lead to help maintain a pain-free existence.

If you are interested in yoga but feeling a little intimidated and haven’t yet dared to cross that threshold, I would suggest finding a local beginner class and a teacher you like.  I really like to go to Syracuse Yoga.  The studio environment is welcoming and relaxing.  There is an array of very knowledgeable instructors and classes for all levels, beginner to experienced.

Your body is your home for the duration of your life.  Whatever it’s age and strengths and weaknesses, it’s a wonderful gift.   Yoga is designed to honor and appreciate the body through physical practices, work and meditation and not only increases flexibility and strength, but when done a few times each week may be a noticeable difference when it comes to your overall health.
